Spa Service: How Much Microdermabrasion Can Improve Your Skin

Heidi M. Rolf

When you look in the mirror each morning do you focus on trying to downplay the fine lines around your eyes? Do you work at hiding the random large pores or mild acne scars that dot your face? Do you try to camouflage moderate discolorations, or wonder how to brighten a dull complexion?

If you’re nodding as you’re reading, you may benefit from a skin treatment called microdermabrasion. While the name may sound, well, abrasive, it’s actually a quick and painless procedure that exfoliates dead skin cells and improves skin tone and texture. Our aesthetician will use a hand-held device to gently brush and lift away dead cells.

Following microdermabrasion, your skin may be more sensitive since the top layer of skin has been sloughed off, and you’ll be advised to use sun protection to prevent irritation.

In general, as a stand-alone procedure, your skin will immediately appear brighter, more evenly toned, and it will feel noticeably smoother after just one session. However, to get the best results, microdermabrasion should be performed once a week for four weeks and then every four to six weeks.

Microdermabrasion can also be paired with other treatments, like peels. Because it clears the skin of dead cells, peels and other products can penetrate the skin more easily, making them more effective.

If you’re interested in learning more about microdermabrasion, schedule a 15-minute consultation or call to make an appointment with Rachel.

Spa Service: Restore & Rejuvenate with a Glycolic Acid Facial Peel

Tabitha Baker

At Sacred Hour, we are dedicated to supporting your well-being. We continually look to add new products and services to our menu that will ensure you you leave our space feeling relaxed and nourished on every level. Beyond massages, we offer a number of skincare services from full facials that include a series of services designed to address different skin needs to single-step services such as peels and microdermabrasion that target specific problem areas.

Among our facial services is the glycolic acid peel which aims to remove dead skin buildup, smooth fine lines and wrinkles, reduce the appearance of discolorations and brighten skin tone. This is a mild chemical peel that works great for people who have acne, mild sun damage or light age lines.

When you schedule a peel service, our aesthetician will work with you to put together a skincare plan that will address your specific needs and guarantee that the peel is appropriate for your skin type and condition. After a consultation, the peel solution will be applied. The length of time it sits on your skin will depend on your skin needs. There is little to no discomfort during or after the peel. Your skin may tingle or feel prickly during the peel and your skin may flake slightly in the days following. Therefore, you'll be advised to avoid sunlight and use sun protection because your skin will be sensitive during this healing time. Due to this, you may want to plan peels at least a week prior to any significant event.

Depending on your skin type and condition, it may take several peels to see results. And, while results will vary by individual, many clients note brighter skin following their first peel.

If you’re interested in finding out more about the glycolic acid peel, schedule a 15-minute consultation or make an appointment with Rachel or Maureen.

Shirodhara: Ancient Practice Promotes Balance and Profound Relaxation

Tabitha Baker

Shirodhara is a warm oil treatment based on the principles of Ayurvedic healing. Ayurveda is a holistic system that aims to balance the body, mind and spirit, through diet, herbal therapies, lifestyle choices, meditation and breathing techniques.

The term Shirodhara is derived from two Sanskrit words, “shiro”, meaning head, and “dhara”, meaning flow. During Shirodhara massage, a steady flow of warm oil is poured onto the forehead, or the third eye, to relax the mind and stimulate mental clarity. The third eye chakra is believed to be the seat of clear thought, spiritual contemplation and self reflection. The steady, rhythmic pouring of oil over this chakra stimulates a deeply relaxing state.

At Sacred Hour, Shirodhara is performed in a 90-minute session during which the massage therapist will offer a full body massage to relax tense muscles and stimulate circulation. This is followed by the Shirodhara technique during which the massage therapist will also massage the forehead and scalp to quiet the mind and promote relaxation.

Shirodhara is said to relieve stress, anxiety, depression, insomnia, and migraines. In one study, a whole body massage followed by Shirodhara led to a significant improvement in mood, as well as a decrease in breathing rate, blood pressure and heart rate.

Watch our blog next week where we’ll be posting our first video demonstration. If you’re unsure, watch the video to find out exactly how the technique is performed. Mention our blog and receive $5 off your first Shirodhara experience!
