SHIRODHARA: ANCIENT PRACTICE PROMOTES BALANCE AND PROFOUND RELAXATION
Shirodhara is a warm oil treatment based on the principles of Ayurvedic healing. Ayurveda is a holistic system that aims to balance the body, mind and spirit, through diet, herbal therapies, lifestyle choices, meditation and breathing techniques.
The term Shirodhara is derived from two Sanskrit words, “shiro”, meaning head, and “dhara”, meaning flow. During Shirodhara massage, a steady flow of warm oil is poured onto the forehead, or the third eye, to relax the mind and stimulate mental clarity. The third eye chakra is believed to be the seat of clear thought, spiritual contemplation and self reflection. The steady, rhythmic pouring of oil over this chakra stimulates a deeply relaxing state.
At Sacred Hour, Shirodhara is performed in a 90-minute session during which the massage therapist will offer a full body massage to relax tense muscles and stimulate circulation. This is followed by the Shirodhara technique during which the massage therapist will also massage the forehead and scalp to quiet the mind and promote relaxation.
Shirodhara is said to relieve stress, anxiety, depression, insomnia, and migraines. In one study, a whole body massage followed by Shirodhara led to a significant improvement in mood, as well as a decrease in breathing rate, blood pressure and heart rate.
